British-Nigerian boxer, Anthony Joshua, is suspected to have suffered eye socket damage, having been evacuated to a hospital on Saturday night, after a crushing loss to Oleksandr Usyk.
Anthony Joshua’s eyes were already blackened and swollen by the 10th round of the fight, even as Usyk kept the punches coming at him at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The Ukrainian almost knocked him down in the final seconds, but won via unanimous decision 117-112, 116-112 and 115-113.
“He said he couldn’t see after the ninth round, obviously he was getting tagged a lot as well. His power looked like it had left him, the tank was empty and it was only heart which kept him on his feet in the 12th round,” Eddie Hearn, Joshua’s promoter, said afterwards.
On his part, Usyk said, “I give praise to Jesus Christ.”
Meanwhile, Eddie Hearn has confirmed the British boxer’s rematch with Oleksandr Usyk.
Anthony Joshua (AJ) proved unable to withstand Usyk’s speed, movement and accuracy and the Ukrainian is now the new heavyweight champion.
Although the Nigerian-born boxer recorded some moments of success throughout the fight, they weren’t enough to give him victory.
The bell saved AJ from being knocked out as Usyk ultimately outclassed Joshua and had him out on his feet in the final round.
Hearn told Sky sport that AJ has vowed to win the rematch which will certainly be his next fight: “I spoke to him [Joshua].
“It was a tough defeat. Usyk was the deserved winner and he’s got to make changes in the rematch.”
